This family contains some small shrubs, but are mainly herbs. The leaves are opposite and without stipules. The flowers are usually grouped into dense heads, they are bisexual and zygomorphic. The sepals are small and number 4 or more. There are between 4 and 5 fused petals and usually 4 stamens.
