This is a very large family including a wide range of plants, indeed it is sometimes split into several smaller families. The family includes herbs, trees, shrubs, climbers and succulents. The herbs usually have some form of subterranean storage organ such as a bulb or corm. The leaves are a wide variety of shapes, but consistently have main veins parallel to the leaf margin. The flowers are usually bisexual and actinomorphic, with 6 perianth segments and usually 6 stamens. The fruit is either a berry or capsule.
